4.4.2 Other historic lightstations and lighthouses

Lighthouses and aids to navigation, both historic and modern replacements, are scattered throughout the World Heritage Area, including Queensland islands. For the purposes of this assessment, only historic heritage values located on a Commonwealth island, reef or cay are assessed. Condition reporting on the historical significance of aids to navigation, floating and temporary lights, light ships and other related infrastructure in the Region is a data gap.12

Restoration of the Pine Islet lighthouse is being planned

Pine Islet lightstation was located on Pine Islet, a small rocky island east of Sarina in the Percy Isles. The lighthouse was relocated in 1995 and the Pine Islet site remains dilapidated.72 A local stewardship restoration project of the lighthouse in the Mackay marina is being planned; information on its current condition is a data gap.1146 1147

Lightstations and lighthouses outside the Region are well documented. In contrast, a systematic record of historic places in the Region, and places in the Catchment related to the historic heritage of the Region, is not available. Figure 4.4 therefore identifies only a portion of the historic lightstations, lighthouses and other historic places in the World Heritage Area.
