Traditional use of marine resources is part of First Nations peoples’ traditions. It is undertaken by more than 70 Traditional Owner clan groups who maintain connection to the Sea Country within the Region. Traditional use by these groups includes undertaking lawful activities as part of First Nation peoples’ customs or traditions for the purposes of personal, domestic or communal needs. Activities such as fishing, collecting, hunting and harvesting, and caring for Indigenous heritage places are considered to be traditional use. Many First Nations people undertake traditional use to practise ‘living maritime culture’, provide traditional food for families and educate younger generations about traditional rules and protocols.
